Operation at Langham Tower
Armed police were deployed to the former Sunderland High School site on Gray Road, Hendon, late Saturday evening following reports of suspicious activity. Officers, supported by a drone unit, breached the Grade II listed building at approximately 10pm.
Inside, authorities discovered a significant cannabis cultivation site containing an estimated 800 plants. The facility is currently being dismantled by Northumbria Police.
Arrests and Investigation
Two men were arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the production of a Class B drug.
* A man in his 50s has since been released with no further action. * A man in his 40s has been released on bail while enquiries continue.
Local residents reported a heavy police presence, which remained at the site into the early hours of Sunday morning. Northumbria Police confirmed that firearms officers were in attendance as a "precautionary measure" during the initial raid.
