A Life-Changing Prescription
Adam Knight, a 36-year-old chef from Birmingham, has spoken out about how medical cannabis has provided relief after two decades of severe sleep deprivation and night terrors. Knight, who lives with PTSD and anxiety, reported that traditional antipsychotic and antidepressant medications—which he had been prescribed since childhood—were ineffective and left him feeling isolated and mentally "foggy."
Since receiving a prescription from the UK medical cannabis clinic Releaf in July, Knight describes the impact as "instantaneous." He noted that the treatment has allowed him to engage with therapy for the first time, improve his communication with friends and family, and finally achieve restful sleep.
Challenging the Stigma
Medical cannabis has been a legal treatment option in the UK since 2018 when prescribed by a specialist doctor. Despite this, many patients still face significant barriers to access and lingering social stigma. Knight, who uses a medical-grade vaporiser to administer his prescribed flower, is now advocating for others to consider the treatment.
"It felt like my whole brain had been wired wrongly for the past twenty-odd years," Knight said. "Now I’m slowly getting to a place where I can accept therapy. Absolutely give medical cannabis a go because it’s changed my life."
His experience highlights the ongoing debate regarding the accessibility of cannabis-based medicines for mental health conditions in the UK, where advocates argue that wider integration into the healthcare system could offer a vital alternative for patients who have found little success with conventional pharmaceuticals.
