Builders assist police in £1m Colchester cannabis farm discovery

A routine refurbishment project took an unexpected turn in Layer Marney, near Colchester, when contractors discovered an extensive cannabis cultivation operation estimated to be worth £1 million.

Staff from Keystones Property Group were on-site at a former chicken farm on August 28 to carry out refurbishment works when they became suspicious of sealed buildings and audible ventilation equipment. Upon being warned by individuals on-site to leave, the contractors contacted Essex Police and utilised a drone to monitor the area, capturing footage of individuals fleeing the scene.

A 'substantial' operation

When officers arrived at the site on Clears Road, they uncovered a large-scale production facility. According to the contractors, the site featured extensive growing areas, sophisticated ventilation systems, and dedicated living quarters for those managing the crop. A second barn appeared to be in the process of being prepared for further cultivation.

"For us, the most concerning part of the incident was the potential danger our employees and contractors unknowingly faced," a spokesperson for Keystones Property Group stated. "Had we known individuals were occupying other parts of the site, or that serious criminal activity was potentially taking place there, our staff and contractors would never have been put in that position."

Police investigation ongoing

Essex Police confirmed that a 24-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested at the scene on suspicion of cannabis cultivation. He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges surrounding the illicit cannabis market in the UK. While enforcement remains the primary response, critics of the current prohibitionist model often point to the dangers posed by unregulated, criminal-run grow sites—including fire risks and the exploitation of vulnerable workers—as a key argument for the implementation of a regulated, legal cannabis market that could shift production into a safe, transparent, and taxable framework.
