Sentencing at Manchester Crown Court
A 56-year-old woman from Bury has been handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, after pleading guilty to the importation of a controlled substance. Andrea Burke, of Spring Street, was apprehended at Manchester Airport on 26 February after attempting to transport 18kg of cannabis into the country.
Burke appeared at Manchester Crown Court on 8 October, where she was also placed under an 18-month probation supervision requirement. The court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the seized cannabis and mandated that the defendant pay a £187 surcharge.
Enforcement and Policy
The case was brought forward by Greater Manchester Police under the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979. While this incident highlights the ongoing enforcement of current drug importation laws, it remains a stark example of the significant resources directed toward interdicting cannabis at the border—a substance that remains a primary focus of UK drug enforcement despite growing calls for a regulated, legalised market to replace the illicit trade.
