A man has been arrested after police discovered a suitcase filled with cannabis at an address in Gosport while much of the country was watching England's World Cup group-stage victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Strong smell leads officers to property
Officers attending the Gosport area on Tuesday 1 July reported a strong smell of cannabis coming from a property. Questions were put to those present and a search of the address was carried out.
During the search, officers found a suitcase containing cannabis. Five large bags of the drug were seized from the suitcase as evidence.
Arrest and ongoing investigation
A man was arrested in connection with the discovery, interviewed, and later released under investigation while enquiries continue.
Hampshire Police said the operation reflected a continued focus on drug-related offending in the Gosport and Fareham area, with neighbourhood teams prioritising intelligence-led action against local supply.
Multi-team operation
The force described the incident as a joint effort involving Gosport and Fareham neighbourhood teams, the response team, the priority crime team, custody staff, and investigation officers who will now progress the case.
Cannabis possession and supply remain illegal in the UK outside tightly regulated licensed frameworks. Penalties depend on the quantity involved and whether offences are treated as personal use or supply.
Reporting based on statements from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
