Airport Smuggling Crackdown
A 34-year-old London man, Zane Jamahl Hutton-Lewis, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison at Paisley Sheriff Court following a failed attempt to smuggle 43.8kg of cannabis into the UK. The haul, valued at approximately £430,000, was discovered by Border Force officers at Glasgow Airport on 21 January 2025.
The arrest was part of a wider investigation led by the Scottish Organised Crime Partnership, a collaborative unit between the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Police Scotland.
Escalating Enforcement
The NCA has reported a dramatic surge in air passenger cannabis seizures, with figures rising from 142 in 2023 to 976 in 2025. Data suggests the trend is continuing, with 600 couriers arrested in the first half of 2026 alone.
In response, authorities have implemented a strict new financial penalty regime. Smugglers caught in Thailand now face fines of 30,000 Baht (£680) per kilo, potentially leading to two years of detention if unpaid.
Beki Wright, head of the NCA’s borders threat team, warned that those recruited via social media are often abandoned by criminal syndicates. "You will be kept in Thai detention until you have found the money to pay or for two years," Wright stated. "The crime groups that paid you to smuggle it will leave you high and dry."
