Court Appearance in Newcastle

A 25-year-old man, Evris Hoxha, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court this week following a significant police seizure of cannabis. Officers stopped a Vauxhall Vectra on September 28, where they allegedly discovered a carrier bag and two boxes containing the substance.

Seizure Details

According to the prosecution, the search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of approximately 7kg of cannabis. The street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be between £14,000 and £21,000.

Legal Proceedings

Hoxha, a Greek national residing in Brent, London, faces one count of being concerned in the supply of a class B drug. He withheld his plea during the initial hearing. Magistrates declined jurisdiction over the case, deeming it unsuitable for their court, and have remanded the defendant in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on October 28.

This case highlights the ongoing enforcement efforts surrounding the illicit cannabis trade in the North East. Critics of current prohibition policies often point to such seizures as evidence of a thriving black market that could be better managed through a regulated, legal framework, which would redirect resources toward public health and away from the criminal justice system.
