Sentencing outcome in Hartlepool
A mother and son from Hartlepool have been handed suspended prison sentences following a police raid on their home that uncovered both Class A and Class B substances. Lynn Hadfield, 45, and Tommy Hadfield, 22, were arrested in April after officers forced entry to their Kendal Road property.
During the search, police recovered 32 wraps of heroin, a quantity of cannabis, and £1,818 in cash. Evidence of drug dealing was also retrieved from a mobile phone found at the scene. Both defendants pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply and possession of criminal property.
Judicial approach to drug-related offences
At Teesside Crown Court, Judge Jo Kidd opted for suspended sentences, citing the defendants' circumstances. Lynn Hadfield’s defence noted her involvement was linked to a crack-cocaine addiction, while Tommy Hadfield’s legal team highlighted his limited criminal record and struggles with anxiety.
Tommy Hadfield received a 20-month sentence suspended for two years, alongside 200 hours of unpaid work and mental health requirements. Lynn Hadfield was given a 24-month sentence, also suspended for two years, with mandatory rehabilitation days and drug monitoring.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges within the current prohibitionist framework, where individuals struggling with addiction are frequently drawn into the illicit supply chain to fund their own use. Reform advocates often point to such cases as evidence that a regulated market and improved health-led interventions could better address the root causes of drug-related criminality.
