League Issues Warning
The Nuneaton and District Sunday Football League (NDSFL) has issued a stern warning to its member clubs following reports of cannabis consumption at local match venues. League chair Alan Aucott stated that the organisation has received reports of the Class B substance being smoked during games, particularly at grounds shared with other community groups.
Potential Sanctions
In a statement posted to social media, the league warned that persistent offending could lead to serious consequences. "Clubs are reminded that grounds could be withdrawn with persistent offending possibly leading to serious sanctions from the County FA's and NDSL," the chair noted.
Ground owners are reportedly looking to take action against those responsible to prevent further issues, with the league emphasising that the possession or consumption of cannabis in public spaces remains illegal under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
While the league is focused on maintaining the integrity and safety of its venues, the incident highlights the ongoing friction between current prohibitionist policies and the reality of cannabis use in public social settings. As the debate over UK drug reform continues, local disputes such as these underscore the challenges of managing public spaces under existing legislation.
