Operation at St Mary's Church
Officers from the Pendle neighbourhood policing team have dismantled a significant cannabis production facility discovered inside the deconsecrated St Mary’s Church on Manchester Road, Nelson. The raid, supported by the Immediate Response team, was initiated after officers identified suspicious piping leading into the historic building.
Upon entering the premises, police discovered a sophisticated operation spanning multiple rooms, with over 1,500 plants in various stages of growth. All plants have since been seized and removed from the site.
Arrest and Enforcement
During the operation, one individual attempted to evade arrest by jumping from a window. The suspect was quickly apprehended and remains in custody pending further questioning. A spokesperson for Lancashire Police noted that the suspect's attempt to flee was unsuccessful, stating he "failed to consider the impact the drop might have on his running ability."
Authorities have highlighted the broader criminal implications of such large-scale grows, specifically citing concerns regarding human trafficking, exploitation, and violence.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding drug-related activity to contact them via 101 or to report anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers.
