Police Raid Leads to Custodial Sentence
A 37-year-old man from Skewen has been sentenced to 36 months in prison after police executed a search warrant at his home, uncovering a supply of cannabis products.
During the raid on July 8, officers from South Wales Police seized 97g of cannabis, along with cannabis vapes, edibles, and between £8,000 and £10,000 in cash. An examination of the defendant's mobile phone revealed messages confirming his involvement in the supply of the drug.
Sentencing and Legal Context
Shaun Peters, of New Road, Skewen, appeared at Swansea Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of criminal property.
At the time of the offence, Peters was already serving a suspended sentence for similar drug-related convictions. Recorder Paul Lewis KC activated the previous 18-month sentence to run consecutively with an additional 18 months for the new offences.
While the defence noted that Peters had "misused cannabis for much of his life," the court maintained a strict enforcement stance. Cases like this continue to highlight the ongoing debate regarding the UK's current drug policy, as advocates for reform argue that a regulated, legal market would reduce the criminalisation of individuals struggling with substance misuse and redirect police resources toward more serious organised crime.
