Enforcement Action in Felling
Northumbria Police have secured a three-month closure order on a residential property in Coldwell Park Avenue, Felling, following the discovery of an illicit cannabis grow. Officers executed a warrant on August 4, uncovering over 200 plants in various stages of growth. The force estimates the wholesale value of the plants and associated equipment to be approximately £33,000.
A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs. He was further detained by Border Force in connection with immigration offences.
The Impact of Prohibition
While police maintain that such operations are necessary to protect communities from anti-social behaviour, the continued reliance on prohibition-led enforcement highlights the ongoing challenges of the illicit market. Critics of the current UK approach argue that these raids, while removing individual grows, do little to dismantle the organised supply chains that thrive in the absence of a regulated, legalised market.
Sergeant Elliott Richardson of the Gateshead East Neighbourhood Policing Team stated: "We hope this latest action sends a clear message that we will not tolerate drug-related activity in our communities."
As the investigation continues, the closure order serves to prevent further access to the site. The force encourages anyone with concerns regarding suspected criminality to report it via Northumbria Police or by calling 101.
