Police Uncover Hidden Grow
Kent Police have dismantled a significant cannabis cultivation operation in Ashford after discovering a secret room concealed behind a living room sideboard. Officers raided the property on Riverbank Way on August 4, uncovering five rooms modified for drug production and seizing approximately 250 mature plants.
Sentencing and Investigation
During the raid, 33-year-old Marius Dardha attempted to flee through the back garden but was apprehended by officers. Evidence retrieved from Dardha’s mobile phone indicated he had been involved in the supply of the Class B drug since September 2025.
Following a guilty plea, Dardha was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment on October 20.
Safety Concerns
Detective Constable Heather Walkden of Kent Police highlighted the dangers associated with such illicit operations, noting that the bypassing of electrical systems to power the grow posed a "serious safety risk" to neighbouring properties.
While police continue to prioritise the dismantling of these unregulated sites, the case underscores the ongoing debate regarding the impact of prohibition. Critics of the current enforcement-led approach argue that such dangerous, hidden grows are a direct consequence of the lack of a regulated, legal market, which would otherwise provide safe, controlled access and remove the incentive for criminal syndicates to operate in residential areas.
