Airport Seizure Leads to Custodial Sentence

A 20-year-old Canadian national, Kouame Anhe, has been sentenced to 32 months in prison following the discovery of 28.45kg of cannabis at Glasgow Airport. The seizure occurred on July 8, when Border Force officers intercepted the luggage, which contained 55 individual packages of the drug.

The Legal Context

While the prosecution valued the haul at approximately £284,500 in street value, the case highlights the ongoing challenges of the UK’s prohibitionist approach to cannabis. Anhe, who pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis, claimed he was coerced into the act due to financial hardship and threats against his family.

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew, presiding at Paisley Sheriff Court, acknowledged the defendant's age and early guilty plea but maintained that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate outcome given the quantity involved.

Reform Perspectives

Cases like this continue to spark debate regarding the efficacy of current drug enforcement strategies. Advocates for reform argue that the illicit market, which thrives under total prohibition, forces vulnerable individuals into high-risk smuggling roles. A regulated, legalised market would not only remove the profit motive for organised crime but would also allow for safer, controlled access, potentially reducing the reliance on such high-stakes, black-market distribution networks.
