Reporting suspected cannabis use

With public opinion on cannabis legalisation increasingly divided—recent polling suggests a near-even split—many residents remain uncertain about how to handle the smell of cannabis from neighbouring properties. Official guidance from police and the UK Government remains consistent: cannabis possession is a Class B criminal offence, and suspected use is classified as a form of anti-social behaviour.

Authorities advise that if you suspect a neighbour is using or cultivating cannabis, you should report it via the non-emergency 101 number or through the relevant police force's website. Reports can also be directed to Crimestoppers, local councils, or landlords if the property is rented.

Anonymity and enforcement

Police have moved to reassure the public that reports are handled with discretion. A spokesperson previously confirmed that officers do not disclose the source of their information to the individuals being investigated. "We wouldn't say information has come from a neighbour as that narrows it down," the spokesperson noted.

While the government maintains that current policy will not change, the debate continues to evolve. Figures such as David Lammy have previously argued for a system where the market is "legalised, regulated and taken away from crime gangs." However, until such reforms are enacted, the law remains clear, with possession carrying a potential five-year prison sentence.
