The Raid and Arrest
A 25-year-old man, Ridvan Fangaj, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being caught operating a cannabis farm in Washington. Police raided the three-bedroom semi-detached property on Swirral Edge on September 22, where they discovered 130 cannabis plants spread across five growing areas.
Officers also seized 7.3 kilos of harvested cannabis and £1,760 in cash. Fangaj, who attempted to flee through the back door during the raid, admitted to producing the drug. Upon his arrest, he reportedly told officers, "I should have listened to my mother."
The Reality of Enforcement
During proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, the defence noted that individuals in Fangaj's position are often low-level "dogsbodies" working at the "coal face" of illicit operations, with limited knowledge of the wider criminal enterprise.
This case highlights the ongoing cycle of enforcement against individuals at the bottom of the supply chain. While police continue to target these grow sites, reform advocates argue that the lack of a regulated, legal market continues to fuel an underground industry that exploits vulnerable individuals, while failing to address the underlying demand for cannabis products.
Fangaj, who has no previous convictions, has signed voluntary deportation papers.
